The challenge
Hasselt University was facing a major shift in the way its ICT environment was managed. Instead of developing software in-house, the organization was transitioning towards integrating standard market solutions into its existing systems.
This required not only a new technological approach, but also a new way of working across ICT teams and end users. Ensuring alignment, reducing resistance, and maintaining control over multiple initiatives became a key challenge in the digital transformation journey.
The collaboration
Together with threon, Hasselt University focused on strengthening both program and project management capabilities.
From a program management perspective, a clear digital roadmap was developed to guide the university’s transformation over the next five years. On the project level, structured collaboration was introduced through project charters, defined project teams, and closer cooperation between ICT staff and end users.
Beyond technology, strong attention was given to change and ways of working, recognizing that digital transformation is primarily about people and collaboration.
The results
The university now benefits from a clear long-term digital direction supported by structured execution. Collaboration between ICT and business stakeholders has improved significantly, leading to smoother project delivery and reduced resistance when introducing major ICT initiatives.
By combining strategic roadmap development with practical project governance and change focus, Hasselt University has built a stronger foundation for successful digital transformation.
