Program Management

Your biggest program risk might not even be in your risk log

In complex strategic programs, risk management often starts with a risk log. But some of the biggest risks are not necessarily the ones that have already been identified and documented. They emerge across projects, remain unspoken or become critical when important decisions are delayed.

So how do you manage risks you cannot fully anticipate? And how can good governance help organisations identify and address them before it’s too late?

Below, our CSO, Anouk Devriese, shares 5 insights on managing risks in game-changing programs through openness, visibility and timely decision-making.

“I see it happen all the time: teams spend a lot of time on their risk logs, while the real risks go unspoken. Difficult conversations are postponed, dependencies remain unclear, and decisions get stuck.

For me, risk management in complex programs comes down to three things: openness, visibility and timely decisions. Because you cannot manage what you don’t discuss.

When you’re managing a type of program you’ve delivered before, you generally know what the main risks are. You know where the challenges lie, which dependencies might come into play and which measures have worked in the past.

But what if you’re leading a program your organisation has never undertaken before? A game-changing initiative that will shape its future, spans multiple projects and departments, and simply cannot afford to fail?

In that case, the risks in your risk log today are not necessarily the ones that will matter most tomorrow. Some only become visible during execution. Others may seem insignificant within an individual project but, taken together, pose a threat to the entire program.

That’s why, for me, risk management in game-changing programs isn’t just about identifying and monitoring risks in advance. It’s primarily about how your organisation deals with uncertainty that cannot yet be fully assessed.”
